CHAPTER ELEVEN

Annual Department of Defense Banquet

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue

Washington D.C.

Nicki lifted her glass of champagne to her lips, using the move as a distraction while she gave her watch another surreptitious peak. Disappointment befell her when she realized it was only a few minutes before eight.

He’s not coming.

She sat her glass down and pretended to listen intently as yet another important political figure spoke at the podium in front of the room. And not just any room, mind you…but the East Room.

As in, the East Room of the White House.

Round tables covered in stark white cloth had been strategically placed around the elaborate space, their chairs filled with men and women who were much more important than her. Giant floral arrangements adorned their centers, and there was a long, rectangular table at the front of the room for the President, First Lady, the Vice President and his wife, Secretary Bradford, and those invited to speak at tonight’s event.

The dinner had literally had six courses, the food much more sophisticated than her simple palate was used to. She’d taken a few bites of everything offered, not wanting to come off as rude or uneasy to please, the whole time thinking of the pizza delivery menu currently tacked to the front of her refrigerator.

Definitely making that order as soon as I get home.

Despite the lack of sustenance in her stomach, Nicki couldn’t help but be in awe of the company she was in. Her boss had introduced her to President Reynolds and his wife earlier before the banquet began.

He’d even agreed to use her phone to take a picture of her with the powerful couple. An image she planned to print and frame the first chance she got.

The Deputy Secretary of Defense, who was second-in-line to her boss, Chairman of the Joint Cheifs of Staff, and the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and their guests filled her table’s seats.

And then there was her.

For Nicki, being invited to an event such as this—meeting the President of the United States, among others—was the opportunity of a lifetime.

Yet, here she was, sitting in the company of the most powerful men and women in the country, dressed in the most expensive gown she’d ever owned—wedding dress, included—and rather than soaking up the experience, she kept bouncing back and forth between stealing glimpses of her watch and checking the door.

She’d tried not to worry while he was away this past week and kept herself busy by putting in extra hours at work and at the gym. And when those things no longer worked, Nicki had given the house she rented a serious deep clean—closets and all.

But at night, when she’d lay her head on her pillow and settled down under the covers, her mind would become filled with worry. No matter how hard she fought against it, all sorts of worst-case-scenarios would start playing frame-by-frame, like some sort of terrifying spy-games movie.

It had gotten so bad the last couple of days Nicki had already decided to ask her boss if he could find a way to check in on them.
